“Bukittinggi is a tourist city”




Bukittinggi (Indonesian for "high hill") is one of the larger cities in West Sumatra, Indonesia, with a population of over 91,000 people and an area of 25.24 km². It is situated in the Minangkabau highlands, 90 km by road from the West Sumatran capital city of Padang. It is located at 0°1820S 100°229E / 0.30556°S 100.36917°E / -0.30556; 100.36917, near the volcanoes Mount Singgalang (inactive) and Mount Marapi (still active). At 930 m above sea level, the city has a cool climate with temperatures between 16.1°-24.9°C.
Bukittinggi is famous as the city center for the development of tourism in West Sumatra, has a beautiful nature with the United Kingdom known as the City Tour that proclaimed Governor of West Sumatra Ir. Azwar Anas dated March 11, 1984. A very famous valley is located in the canyon Sianok west side of town Bukittinggi with a depth of 100 m and has a slope of between 80A ° - 90A which become tourist attraction, in addition to the Jam Gadang was built Controleur Rook Maker in 1926 with a background of three mountains namely: Mount Merapi, Mount Singgalang, and Mount Sago so once popularly known as the Tri Arga as a nickname for this area.

A.History



The city has its origins in five villages which served as the basis for a marketplace.
The city was known as Fort de Kock during colonial times in reference to the Dutch outpost established here in 1825 during the Padri War. The fort was founded by Captain Bauer at the top of Jirek hill and later named after the then Lieutenant Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, Hendrik Merkus de Kock.The first road connecting the region with the west coast was built between 1833 and 1841 via the Anai Gorge, easing troop movements, cutting the costs of transportation and providing an economic stimulus for the agricultural economy. In 1856 a teacher-training college (Kweekschool) was founded in the city, the first in Sumatra, as part of a policy to provide educational opportunities to the indigenous population.A rail line connecting the city with Payakumbuh and Padang was constructed between 1891 and 1894.
During the Japanese occupation of Indonesia in World War II, the city was the headquarters for the Japanese 25th Army, the force which occupied Sumatra. The headquarters was moved to the city in April 1943 from Singapore, and remained until the Japanese surrender in August 1945.
During the Indonesian National Revolution, the city was the headquarters for the Emergency Government of the Republic of Indonesia (PDRI) from December 19, 1948 to July 13, 1949. During the second 'Police Action' Dutch forces invaded and occupied the city on December 22, 1948, having earlier bombed it in preparation. The city was surrendered to Republican officials in December 1949 after the Dutch government recognized Indonesian sovereignty.
The city was officially renamed Bukittinggi in 1949, replacing its colonial name. From 1950 until 1957, Bukittinggi was the capital city of a province called Central Sumatra, which encompassed West Sumatra, Riau and Jambi. In February 1958, during a revolt in Sumatra against the Indonesian government, rebels proclaimed the Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia (PRRI) in Bukittinggi. The Indonesian government had recaptured the town by May the same year.

B.POPULATION

Bukittinggi city has 98,551 inhabitants according to recent data the soul with the population growth rate of 2.04% per year. In the spirit of community building Bukittinggi was quite encouraging, as evidenced by the growing prosperity of life in general edged as a trader, employees, farmers, entrepreneurs of small industries and handicrafts as well as other services. Most of the residents of Bukittinggi about 99% are Muslim and the remainder are Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist and Hindu. Densest population residing in the District of bottom scrapings length, because the center of trade and other activities are mostly located in the district with an average density of 5531 inhabitants per km2.


C.CLIMATE AND GEOGRAPHICAL

In general in this city a lot of rain, an average of 2.381 millimeters per year with average rainfall of 193 days per year and air humidity range between min 82.0% - 90.8% max. Hence this area is temperate, cool temperate, with temperatures 17-24°C.


D.Transportation




Bukittinggi is connected to Padang by road, though a dysfunctional railway line also exists. For inner-city transport, Bukittinggi employs a public transportation system known as Mersi (Merapi Singgalang) and IKABE that connect locations within the city. The city also still preserves the traditional horse-cart widely known in the area as Bendi, although the use is limited and more popular to be used as vehicle for tourist, both domestic and foreign.


E.Tourism
It is a city popular with tourists due to the climate and central location. Attractions within the city include:


1.Ngarai Sianok (Sianok Canyon)



Sianok canyon is a steep valley (ravine) located in the border town of Bukittinggi, the IV Koto district, Agam regency, West Sumatra. The valley is long and winding as the southern border town of Koto Gadang canyon to the village Sianok Anam Tribe, and ended in the district Palupuh. Sianok canyon has very beautiful scenery and also became one of the mainstay of the provincial tourist attraction.
Sianok canyon ravine has about 100 m, stretches along 15 km with a width of about 200 m, and is part of the fault that separates the island of Sumatra in half lengthwise (Semangko fault). This fault forms a steep wall, even perpendicular and form a green valley-the result of movement down the earth's crust (sinklinal)-fed rod Sianok (rod means river, in the Minangkabau language) where the water is clear. In the Dutch colonial era, the gap is referred to as buffalo sanget, because of the many free-living wild buffalo in the bottom of this canyon.

Sianok rod can now be forded by the use of canoes and kayaks are disaranai by a water sports organization "Qurays". The route taken is from the village until the ellipsoid Sitingkai Lambah Palupuh village for about 3.5 hours. On its banks there's also rare plants such as Rafflesia and medicinal plants. Fauna encountered such long-tailed monkeys, gibbons, hoops, deer, wild boar, leopard, and tapirs.


2.Lobang Jepang (Japanese Caves)




Japan hole Bukittinggi is one of the historical attractions in the city of Bukittinggi,West Sumatra, Indonesia. Japan hole is a tunnel (bunker) the protection of the Japanese occupation forces built around the year 1942 for defense


3.jam gadang




Jam Gadang was built in 1926 by an architect named Yazid Sutan Dental Ameh. Jam Gadang is a gift from the Queen of the Netherlands to the Rook Maker, Controleur or secretary of the town of Bukittinggi in the reign of the Dutch East Indies. Laying the first stone Jam Gadang was conducted by Rook Maker's first son who was then 6 years old.
Such a phenomenal, since it was built and since its establishment, the Jam Gadang has become the center of everyone's attention. It also resulted in the Jam Gadang used as a marker or landmark town of Bukittinggi and also as one of the icons of West Sumatra province.In addition, the room under the Jam Gadang has also been used as a ticket booth, police stations, and warehouses in 1970.
Construction of the Jam Gadang is said to cost of development with a total of 3,000 Gulden, which costs quite fantastic for the size of the time. But it paid off with the famous Jam Gadang as a landmark as well as the iconic town of Bukittinggi. In addition, the Jam Gadang is also set as the zero point the town of Bukittinggi.
Since its establishment, the Jam Gadang has undergone three changes to the roof. Established early in the reign of the Dutch East Indies, the roof of the Jam Gadang round shape with a statue of a rooster facing eastwards on it. Later in the reign of the Japanese occupation shaped pagoda. And since the proclamation of Indonesian independence, the Jam Gadang-shaped roof on a house roof in traditional Minangkabau (Tower House).
The last renovation was done in 2010 by the Heritage Preservation Board Indonesia (ARDI) with the support of Bukittinggi city government and the Dutch embassy in Jakarta, and was inaugurated exactly on the anniversary of the town Bukittinggi to 262 on December 22, 2010.


4.Taman Bundo Kanduang park



The park includes a replica Rumah Gadang (literally: big house, with the distinctive Minangkabau roof architecture) used as a museum of Minangkabau culture, and a zoo. The Dutch hilltop outpost Fort de Kock is connected to the zoo by the Limpapeh Bridge pedestrian overpass.


5.Museum Rumah Kelahiran Bung Hatta (Museum of Bung Hatta Birthplace) 




The birth house of Bung Hatta is located at No.37 Jalan Soekarno-Hatta, Bukittinggi, West Sumatra. This house is where Bung Hatta was born and spent his childhood sampi 11 years old. Bung Hatta continued his secondary education at the Meer Uitgebred Lager Onderwijs (MULO) or secondary school in the city of Padang.

The house which was established around the 1860's and use the wood structure consists of a main building, pavilion, rice barns, kitchens and stables and fish pond. The main building intended for reception room, dining room and mother, uncle, and grandfather of Bung Hatta, while the pavilion serves as a bedroom Bung Hatta.

The original house where Bung Hatta was born already collapsed in the 1960's, but the idea of Bung Hatta Education Foundation Chairman, then the house was rebuilt as an effort to remember and get the proclaimer picture of childhood in the town of Bukittinggi. Research pembangunana re-started from November 1994 and commenced on January 15, 1995. This house was inaugurated on August 12, 1995, coinciding with the birthday of Bung Hatta as well in order to celebrate 50 years of independent Indonesia.
